Introduction to Ontario's Physical Markets

More Frequent Intertie Scheduling (SE-115)

The IESO has launched an initiative to inform research on the benefits and implications of more frequent scheduling of intertie transactions (imports and exports) in the IESO-administered markets. These transactions are currently scheduled in Ontario on an hourly basis. Scheduling intertie transactions more frequently may improve the efficiency of the market, support operations, and increase alignment with neighbouring markets.

Stakeholders are asked to provide feedback and advice on a study paper that summarizes the IESO's research to date on more frequent intertie transactions. This feedback will be carried forward to a broader IESO consultation that will prioritize potential enhancements to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Ontario's electricity market. In particular, the IESO would like to know:

  • Does the analysis consider all of the most important market and operational impacts?

  • Does the analysis consider all of the most important design impacts?

  • How would the implementation of 15 minute scheduling effect your operations?

  • If you are an intertie trader, what has been your experience of 15 minute scheduling in other markets?

Stakeholder engagement closed

This engagement was established to gather input from stakeholders on the results of an IESO study of the opportunities and issues associated with more frequent intertie scheduling. (These transactions are currently scheduled in Ontario on an hourly basis.) The study explored a number of different considerations, including whether more frequent scheduling may improve the efficiency of the market, support operations and increase alignment with neighbouring markets. Feedback received from stakeholders will accompany the study in later market development planning.
