Meeting Ontario’s Capacity Needs: 2020-2024

Over the past two years, the IESO has been working with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive Incremental Capacity Auction (ICA), a fundamental component of the Market Renewal Project. The ICA will provide, in the long-term, the most reliable and efficient solution to meet Ontario’s future capacity needs by targeting a late-2022 auction to address Ontario’s summer 2025 capacity need. In addition, as early as 2020, Ontario requires a mechanism to meet our emerging capacity needs as some long-term power supply contracts expire. Ontario cannot fully rely on resources that do not have a contractual obligation or incentive to provide capacity therefore, the IESO will evolve the demand response auction (DRA) into a broader and more competitive capacity acquisition mechanism to address this capacity need until the comprehensive ICA has commenced.

As part of this process, the IESO will be seeking feedback from stakeholders on certain aspects of the evolution of the DRA. Additional details on the IESO’s plans to engage communities and stakeholders throughout the process can be found in the engagement plan.
