IESO Statement on Potential Power Workers' Union Strike at Ontario Power Generation

December 14, 2018

The IESO ensures the reliable operation of Ontario’s electricity grid, the operation of the electricity markets, and coordinates emergency restoration efforts. This includes working with our Canadian and U.S. neighbours to maintain the continuous reliability of our interconnected North American power grid.

A Power Workers’ Union strike at Ontario Power Generation would put the reliability of Ontario’s electricity system at risk.

The shutdown of OPG’s nuclear and hydroelectric facilities could occur in approximately three weeks. At that point Ontario would not have the generation needed to meet consumer demand and customers would begin losing power.

The IESO will take every action available to delay and mitigate the impact. Planned generator outages will be deferred, operating reserves will be utilized, and there will be increased use of the gas fleet and energy imports from our neighbours. However, these actions will not be enough to prevent significant losses of power.

The IESO continues to monitor the situation and will provide an update if conditions change.

About the IESO:

The IESO manages the province’s power system so that Ontarians receive power when and where they need it. It plans and prepares for future electricity needs and works with its partners to guide conservation efforts.
