Hydroelectric Contract Initiative

As part of the province's commitment to increase Ontario's supply of clean, renewable generation, the Ontario Power Authority, now merged with the Independent Electricity System Operator, developed a program to negotiate new contracts for qualified existing hydroelectric generation facilities in Ontario.

The Hydroelectric Contract Initiative (HCI) was developed and implemented pursuant to the May 7, 2009 ministerial direction.

The HCI allows existing hydroelectric facilities without electricity contracts to obtain 20-year contracts, as well as those facilities which may have already operated for a number of years and wish to continue their operations.

Pursuant to the January 21, 2013 ministerial direction, the IESO is no longer accepting applications for refurbishment, upgrades or expansions of existing facilities currently holding HCI contracts.
