Meeting Ontario’s Capacity Needs: 2020-2024

For the past two years, the IESO has been working with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive incremental capacity auction (ICA). The ICA will provide, in the long-term, the most reliable and efficient solution to meet Ontario’s future capacity needs by targeting a late-2022 auction to address Ontario’s summer 2025 capacity need. In addition to this 2025 need, Ontario requires a mechanism to meet our emerging capacity needs as early as 2020.
The IESO will be launching a stakeholder engagement to evolve the demand response (DR) auction into a broader and more competitive capacity acquisition mechanism to address this capacity need until the comprehensive ICA has commenced.
A meeting has been scheduled for March 7 at the Four Points Sheraton Toronto Airport (6257 Airport Rd, Mississauga, ON), 8:30 am – 12:30 pm, to brief stakeholders on the work needed to evolve the DR Auction. A stakeholder engagement plan and meeting materials will be made available on the IESO website in advance of the meeting and through next week’s IESO Bulletin. Interested parties may include stakeholders involved in the ICA and DR auction and all others are welcome to attend.
