Conservation Efforts Still Needed To Reduce the Impact of Further Power Outages

August 16, 2003

The Independent Electricity Market Operator (IMO) is asking Ontarians to continue to conserve energy. The more people conserve, the less need there will be for rotating power outages.

Here is the current situation, as of 7:00 a.m.

  • Current demand is 13,000 MW and will climb over the morning.

  • The IMO is currently not requesting rotating power outages however that may change as demand increases throughout the day. There may also be power outages taking place as a result of localized problems with the transmission/distribution facilities.

  • As the day progresses, the power system is anticipated to be able to serve 16,500 to 17,500 MW of load.

  • The normal demand for today would be 19,000 MW

  • It is important for the people of Ontario to continue to conserve power in order to avoid or minimize the amount of rotating power outages required.

The IMO will continue to provide updates throughout the day.
