IMO Asks Ontario To Continue Conservation Efforts

August 17, 2003

The Independent Electricity Market Operator (IMO) continues to call for electricity conservation to reduce the need for rotating power outages.

The situation this morning is:

  • Demand for electricity at 7:00 a.m. EST was 12,200 MW.

  • Normal peak demand for a Sunday afternoon at this time of the year is typically 17,500 MW.

  • Continued conservation efforts will help meet the demand and reduce the risk of rotating power outages.

  • The IMO asks all businesses, industries and residential consumers to reduce the strain on the system and wherever possible to avoid using air conditioners, swimming pool pumps and appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines and dryers. If necessary, use should be restricted to between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The IMO is working with provincial officials and neighbouring electricity system operators to assess the situation for Monday and the rest of the week.
