Regional Electricity Planning - East Lake Superior

Forecasting and Planning

Regional electricity planning in the East Lake Superior region was completed in April 2021 with the release of a long-term electricity plan – Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) and supporting Appendices. A Regional Infrastructure Plan (RIP) led by Hydro One is expected to be completed by mid-to-late-2021. This engagement initiative provided communities and stakeholders with an opportunity to offer input for consideration into the development of the IRRP.

Regional electricity plans take a 20-year outlook on every region in the province. The planning process provides an opportunity for communities to inform the IESO about anticipated needs and priorities and to provide feedback on the development of the options for meeting this region’s future electricity needs.

Interested parties that were invited to participate in this engagement initiative include but are not limited to:

  • Municipalities – Bruce Mines, Chapleau, Hilton, Huron Shores, Jocelyn, Johnson, Laird, Macdonald, Meredith & Aberdeen Additional, Plummer Additional, Prince, Sault Ste. Marie, St. Joseph, Tarbutt & Tarbutt Additional, Dubreuilville, Wawa
  • Indigenous communities - Chapleau Cree First Nation, Chapleau Ojibwe, Garden River, Michipicoten, Brunswick House, Batchewana
  • Local distribution companies (LDCs) who serve the community including Algoma Power Inc., Chapleau PUC, Hydro One Distribution and Sault Ste. Marie PUC
  • Transmitters including Hydro One Networks and Hydro One Networks Sault Ste. Marie LP
  • Consumers, service providers and associations for the area

Additional details on the IESO’s plans to engage with communities and interested parties throughout this process can be found in the engagement plan.

East Lake Superior Technical Working Group - A Technical Working Group consisting of the four LDCs in the region, the two local transmitters and the IESO will use this regional planning engagement initiative to consider input to develop the IRRP for the region.
