Resource Adequacy Update: Adding 2,195 MW of Capacity to the Grid

The single largest procurement of battery storage ever in Canada has concluded, with the IESO offering contracts to 10 battery storage facilities for 1,784 MW of capacity through its Long-Term 1 Request for Proposals (LT1 RFP) to help ensure Ontario’s electricity needs are met for the rest of the decade.
The IESO also secured 411 MW of natural gas and on-farm biogas generation that can support longer periods of high demand by being available to generate for at least eight consecutive hours or more, which is critical to maintaining reliability.
The LT1 RFP targeted capacity to come into service between 2026-2028 to meet emerging system needs. The results include competitive prices for new resources, strong community support and significant Indigenous economic interest in projects.
With Ontario’s electricity demand forecast to grow by as much as 60 per cent by 2050, the IESO is planning for ongoing procurements to ensure that the electricity grid is prepared to meet future needs. The next procurements will secure non-emitting supply to support growth in the 2030s and beyond.
