Ramp Rates for Battery Energy Storage System Facilities

Operations

This page is dedicated to the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Ramp Rates for Battery Energy Storage System Facilities initiative.

The installed capacity of battery storage facilities in Ontario is quickly increasing to help meet growing electricity demand over coming decades. Given the scale of deployment, the IESO has identified that the near-instantaneous ramping capabilities offered by batteries can pose challenges under normal operations. To address these challenges, the IESO has issued ramp rate requirement instructions to these facilities through the registration process. This engagement will propose Market Rule amendments to codify existing ramp rate instructions in the rules, gather feedback on proposed requirements, and discuss any concerns with stakeholders.

All comments and enquiries on this engagement can be directed to engagement@ieso.ca.
