Our commitment to enabling Indigenous participation in the energy transition is reflected in the Indigenous Engagement Framework, which outlines our approach to open dialogue with communities and building relationships that are based on transparency, honesty and authenticity.
Indigenous Communities in Ontario’s Energy Sector
Indigenous communities are increasingly leading change in Ontario’s energy sector, playing an active role in the areas of energy efficiency, generation and major transmission projects, and participating in the sector in a way that is consistent with their cultural and environmental values.
The IESO collaborates with Indigenous communities to promote equitable participation in the sector and support community capacity building. This includes:
Gaining the skills and knowledge needed to generate renewable energy where they live and work.
Enabling further business development from revenue and partnerships in clean energy projects.
Better understanding the kinds of opportunities available to them and their communities in the energy field.
Long-term Planning
Participating in energy projects can enable economic development and employment opportunities for Indigenous-owned companies and communities. Over the next few years, a significant amount of generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure will be developed to meet the province’s growing need for electricity. By taking part in this work, Indigenous communities and organizations have opportunities to drive and guide Ontario’s shared energy future. Learn more about the Long-Term RFP Community Engagement.
